ROXBURY – The county’s new police detective says he solved the first case given him in his job with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8 a.m. Tuesday, after a short investigation into a 2002 case, Lt. Hart Daley arrested Arthur Dwight Haseltine, 70, of Roxbury, charging him with three counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Haseltine, who failed to post bail of either $1,000 cash or $10,000 real estate, was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris.

By 3 p.m. Tuesday he was freed on bail, a jail official said Thursday.

Haseltine is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 19 in Oxford County Superior Court.

Daley said he expects Haseltine to be indicted next month by an Oxford County grand jury, which means he could be arraigned earlier than October.

He said Haseltine was ordered to stay away from the victim, a girl under the age of 16, her family, and witnesses. He is also to have no contact with anyone under the age of 16.

Daley declined to release specifics of the case pending trial.

“This was first reported to the sheriff’s office in 2002, but the crimes occurred over several years. I just got hired here, and this is the first thing that was assigned to me last Friday,” said the former long-time Rumford patrolman and sergeant. Daley left Rumford 3 years ago with two other patrolmen to work for Lewiston police.

Daley said the case wasn’t a cold-case file, but rather, “a case that was put on the back-burner and kind of got left behind.”

“I don’t work that way, so, I did my thing. I used the old reports and interviews, then did some phone interviews with the victim’s family. Not bad for a first case,” he said.

Daley, who lives in Dixfield, said he gave Lewiston police a two-week notice and started the county job last Friday. He heads the county’s investigations.

“I’m glad to be back over here,” he added.
