Lewiston – Barbara N. Allen, 91, passed away at her home on July 11, with her family at her side.
She was born on Nov. 14, 1914, in East Walpole, Mass., the daughter of Chester and Florence Newton. She was educated in Massachusetts schools prior to moving to Maine with her family. She held various jobs in Massachusetts and in Maine. She worked for Howard Johnson at his first restaurant; she worked a number of years at various positions for W.T. Grant, and her last formal position in the late 1940s was in the administration office for the president of Bates College.
She married Donald “Bud” R. Allen on April 21, 1946. She spent the majority of her life taking care of her husband, their three children, and their home. She decorated the inside with her own paintings and the outside with flower gardens. She spent much of her summer days relaxing on her porch, enjoying her yard.
She had a great sense of humor and loved socializing over coffee and spending time with family. She loved animals and had numerous pets throughout her life. She especially enjoyed bird-watching with a wide variety of birds visiting her feeders and birdbaths. She was an avid reader who loved to debate current events.
After her husband passed away in 1988, she volunteered for 13 years in the Montello and Longely school libraries. Her 80th birthday was celebrated with an elaborate party hosted by Montello School.
She is survived by her three children, Janet Marks of Richmond, Va., Kenneth Allen and Liberty Stubbs of Oxnard, Calif. and Laurie Allen of Lisbon Falls and companion, Philip Boucher; her niece and nephews, Ellen Field and husband, David, of New Gloucester, David Whiting and wife, Vickie, of Poland Spring, Richard Whiting and wife, Bridget, of Auburn; her four grandchildren, Brian McPhail and wife, Gracie, Melanie Nunnally and husband, Curt, Donald Allen and Leo Lupoli; her two great-granddaughters, Sidney McPhail and Meredith Nunnally; great-nephews and niece, Kurt Whiting, Cullen Whiting and Alyson Whiting and her two children, Taylor and Cameron; and her special four-legged friends, Raven and Cruise.
She was predeceased by her parents; her devoted husband, Donald; a sister, Phyllis Whiting; and a son-in-law, John Marks.
