CANTON – Sewer Superintendent David Madison told selectman Thursday that repairs to the sewer system have cost the town nearly $8,000 since April.
The problem appears to come from Victoria Villa, a nursing home in Canton, he said. The disposal of rags in the sewer system has been obstructing the wastewater facility and damage has been done for several months.
Administrative Assistant Kathy Hutchins said the home had been sent a letter warning it that rags and other things are not permitted in the system.
The ordinance states that anyone making illegal disposals are liable to the town for any expense, loss or damage caused. Any facility that allows prohibited substances that obstruct sewage flow violate the ordinance and are subject to fines and expenses related to the damage.
The board voted to send another letter to Victoria Villa. Selectman Donald Hutchins said they would do an analysis to determine the amount of damage they said was caused by the Villa.
Jason Oleson from the snowmobile club spoke to the board about using the garage on the Keith property to store an ATV, snowmobile and recreation committee equipment. The garage, which is in the flood plain, is not insurable, but would be convenient for the club to store equipment near the trails.
Selectman Rick Ray said the club has done much for the town and continues to be a good supporter with donations to the 4-H Club and fire department.
Board Chairman Jackie Conant suggested the club write up its proposal so the town will know exactly what the intent is with the property.
Kathy Hutchins said Jane Leuders had volunteered to start a recreation committee and the board was in favor.
Rick Houghton was hired as the animal control officer for a flat fee of $1,400 a year and mileage at 43 cents a mile.
Hutchins said Kay Hawkins has agreed to fill in as plumbing inspector until Dec. 30 and the board approved.
Fire Chief Wayne Dube said the department would like to get the cabinets to put in the kitchen in the new fire station from the Hindershot house. The house is in the flood zone and the town owns it. The board voted to give the fire department the cabinets and take the front door for the new town office.
