RUMFORD – The founder of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises LLC will kick off a signature drive calling for a casino in the area at 1:30 p.m. today at the Municipal Auditorium.
Seth Carey, founder of the group, wants to put a referendum question before state voters to allow a casino somewhere in Oxford County. About 40,000 signatures of Maine residents are needed.
The referendum question includes a stipulation that part of the casino’s revenues would go to fund specific state programs. It would also stipulate that the state would have only one casino, the one intended for this county.
According to the group’s Web site, some of those state programs include repayment of Maine college graduate loans, funding an east-west highway and prescription drug assistance for senior residents.
An advertisement in a local newspaper has been asking for signature gatherers for several weeks.
People will be able to ask questions about the casino effort at today’s gathering.
