AUBURN – George J. “Candyman” Pleau, 82, of Poland Road, Auburn, died Friday evening, July 14, at Hospice House of Androscoggin.
He was born in Auburn on Oct. 14, 1923, the son of Frank and Dorilda (Pelletier) Pleau, and was educated in Auburn schools.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters.
He married the former Constance Michaud of Auburn on July 16, 1971, who survives him.
Prior to his retirement, he worked in the local textile industry. For the past 17 years, he worked at Hannaford stores, until as recently as two weeks ago.
He was an avid sports fan, including hockey, baseball, football and bowling. He was a member of a local bowling team for many years. He enjoyed cribbage and everyone that he met.
He was a longtime member of the church he loved, South Lewiston Baptist Church, were he had been head usher and was better known to all as the “Candyman.”
Besides his wife, he is survived by one stepson, Paul Shaw of Pennsylvania; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Shaw of Salem, Mass.; one brother, Roland Pleau of Lewiston; one sister, Julie Champagne of Wilton; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
