AUBURN – The Woman’s Literary Union 2006 annual scholarship has been awarded to Mary Julia Martin, a 2006 graduate of Edward Little High School. She will be attending Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and she is the daughter of Ken and Sue Martin of Auburn.
Martin was active in the YMCA, youth field hockey, All-Student Theatre Project fundraiser and National Honor Society Kiddie Night. At ELHS, she was a member of the field hockey team, National Honor Society, Drama Club, show choir and class executive board. She has received the Dean’s Scholarship from Clark University and plans to major in the arts.
The Woman’s Literary Union purpose is the cultural and intellectual advancement of women. The scholarship is given to a student graduating from a high school in Androscoggin County who plans to enter the field of arts or literature.
The group was organized in 1892. Meetings are held at the WLU clubhouse, the former Horatio G. Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., at 2 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.
The WLU also has a garden club that meets at 2 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month and the After Dark Club, for stay-at-home mothers or working women, which meets in the evening on the third Tuesday of the month. New members are welcome at the monthly meetings.
The scholarship committee is comprised of Marguerite Powers, Mildred Bickford, Melanie Ness and Barbara Randall.
