LEWISTON – Janice “Jan” Smith, 58, of Wilton, died late Friday evening, July 14, at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Farmington on June 8, 1948, a daughter of Charles “Charlie” and Evelyn “Pat” Lord Bottiggi. She received her education in Wilton schools and graduated from Wilton Academy in 1966. She continued her education by attending Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Lewiston, from where she graduated in 1969.

She held many leadership positions in the nursing field, culminating in a clinical coordinator position at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

On Oct. 1, 1977, she married James S. Smith at the Calvary Hill Baptist Church in Wilton.

She was active in her community and had been a volunteer at Dirigo Girls State for the last nine years. She was a member of the Wilton Blueberry Festival Committee and worked tirelessly raising funds for the Jennifer Lowe Smith Scholarship Fund, which aided many students, locally and abroad, in furthering their education.

She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch and quilting and traveled to many locales, nationally and internationally, with her family and friends. She was a member of the Farmington Emblem Club and several local card-playing clubs, as well as having been a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader for several years. She had many online computer friends.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Dr. James Stuart Smith of Wilton; a son, Stephen Lord Smith of Wilton; a daughter, Kathi Jeanne Smith of Bend, Ore.; sister, Rhoda MacMaster and her husband, Brian, of South Gardiner; brother, Duane Bottiggi of Genoa, Nev.; sister, Laurel Dube and her husband, John, of Eustis; and a brother, Stephen P. Bottiggi of South Harwich, Mass.; a very special friend, Shannon Smith and her husband, Albert, of Wilton; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer Lowe Smith, on June 20, 2003.
