LEWISTON – The public is invited to learn the basics of singing barbershop-style harmony at a free workshop hosted by the Lewiston Public Library at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20. Leading the session will be members of the Sheepscot Sound Barbershop Quartet.

Geared to teenagers through adults, males and females, the hour-long program will introduce the elements of crafting and performing basic four-part vocal harmony.

Participants will have a chance to test their skills on a selection of such barbershop classics as “My Wild Irish Rose” and “Shine on Me,” according to Ted Tracy, who sings tenor for the quartet. “No prior experience is necessary,” said Tracy, “only an enthusiasm for singing.”

The Sheepscot Sound is a mid-coast quartet whose members also perform with the Nor’easters Barbershop Chorus, based in Brunswick. Following their afternoon workshop at the library, the quartet will perform from 6 to 7 p.m. on the other side of town at Bates College as part of the college’s Lakeside Concert Series.

Admission to that event is also free. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating. That event will be held at the amphitheater behind the Olin Arts Center on Russell Street, with the adjacent Olin Concert Hall as the rain-site.

The vocal workshop is slated for Callahan Hall in the library’s new cultural learning center. The library is located at 200 Lisbon St., corner of Pine Street. More information is available by calling LPL cultural coordinator Cindy Larock at 784-0135, ext. 200.
