KINGFIELD – Nutritional expert John Bagnulo, the Freeman Township man who climbed Mount Everest in May, will give a free lecture on “Carbohydrates for health, weight loss and optimal performance” at Peak Performance, a 333 Main St. gym, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25.
The public is welcome to attend.
Bagnulo has a master’s and Ph.D. in nutrition and fitness.
Alison Thayer of Peak Performance gym scheduled the free evening discussion because of a desire to inform people about the benefits of fitness and proper nutrition.
Thayer said she often hears people talking about diets, the constant counting of calories and success and failures. She says she hears about no-carb diets and low-carb diets but not a lot of discussion about nutrition and whole foods, including carbohydrates.
“Carbohydrates are our main source of fuel,” Thayer points out. “If you have balance in fitness and nutrition, your whole quality of life improves. John is very knowledgeable about nutrition and people can learn a lot from him.”
Bagnulo is a Mt. Blue High School graduate, who has studied nutrition for years and has traveled around the country as a guest speaker on the subject. He recently started his own business as a nutrition counselor and will set up individual nutrition programs for people geared to help them attain maximum performance.
“People do actually need more carbohydrates in their diet,” Bagnulo says. “They burn the cleanest, are essential for proper hydration of the body and are also rich in anti-oxidants.”
Bagnulo says that besides the verbal information he will share on the 25th, he will also bring some “really good foods” so people can see the wide selection that’s available and get ideas for good eating.
“It’s a good idea to build a diet around carbohydrates,” said Bagnulo. “Then people have the proper amount of energy to live their lives and do what they wish to do.”
“He certainly practices what he preaches,” Thayer says of Bagnulo. “I think it’s going to be a very informative evening for people, as the two, fitness and nutrition, go hand in hand.”
