LEWISTON – Raymond L. Alward died Friday, July 14, surrounded by family and friends at d’Youville Pavilion where he was a resident for the past year. He was formerly a resident of Chestnut Place.

He was born in Lewiston on Oct. 1, 1937, the son of Lloyd and Mignonne Beaulieu Alward.

He was educated in Lewiston schools and was a stableman at the Lewiston Race Track. He also worked in the shoe manufacturing industry, most recently at Falcon Shoe.

He enjoyed many hobbies, including being a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, never missing a televised game.

He liked roller skating at the Auburn Roller Drome in the ’60s and was an avid bowler and president of the L/A Bowling League for many years. He enjoyed his “minute of fame,” appearing on TV to win a Maine State Bowling Title. He was a member of the South End Club and past president of the Cavalier Club in Lewiston.

His caregivers at d’Youville gave him loving, compassionate care and formed a special bond. Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice offered Ray many hours of friendship. A special thanks to Father Dan Greenleaf of Holy Cross Parish and Linda Grant, d’Youville chaplain, for providing spiritual strength and support.

He is survived by many close friends, especially Marie Kennedy and Rita Hardy, both of Lewiston; the Masse cousins; and one special cousin, Lorraine Masse Bolen, who provided Ray with love, hope, friendship and encouragement with her daily visits.
