RANGELEY – The Sunday Nature Program at Orgonon on the Dodge Pond Road at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, will be “Learn about Our Wild Birds” with Jennifer Perry.
Perry is a resident of Deerfield, N.H., and is a part-time resident in Rangeley Plantation. She has been an avid amateur naturalist and birder for more than 35 years. She has spearheaded two new birding projects in the Rangeley region: Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count and the Maine Owl Monitoring Program for Maine Audubon.
Perry studied biology and marine science at Cornell and UNH and has degrees in microbiology and civil engineering. She is the town engineer for Exeter, N.H. Perry spends her time in the Rangeley area skiing, hiking, fishing and boating.
Participants should bring binoculars and a birding field guide, dress appropriately for moderate hiking and the weather and bring water and insect repellent. They will meet at the outdoor classroom on the Orgonon property. The program will end at approximate 4 p.m. The classroom is on the path marked “tomb” to the left of the parking lot.
Visitors can visit the observatory building, which details the life and work of physician/scientist Wilhelm Reich, whose interest in the natural environment led to the introduction of the natural science program in 1989.
The observatory is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday in July and August, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays in September. The adult admission fee is $6; children 12 and under, free.
All the Sunday nature programs are free. Individual donors and a grant from the Wing Benjamin Trust fund the natural science program.
