More than 95 farms throughout Maine will open to the public on Sunday for Open Farm Day. Visitors can watch farm activities and demonstrations from milking to felting. They can pet farm animals, pick berries, tour a garden or go on a hay ride. There will be farm-raised products for sale, displays to see and samples to taste.

ANDROSCOGGIN COUNTY

Andes Alpaca Farm

Location: Auburn, 334 Johnson Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Alpaca

Activities: Farm raises top quality alpacas and produces fiber for the cottage industry. Visitors can learn alpaca care and production and get an introduction to the business of alpaca livestock production. You can meet the alpacas, see how to spin fiber and learn how to knit with needles and crochet.

Directions: Take exit 75 from I-95 and follow Route 4 through Auburn. At Lake Auburn, take a left onto Lake Shore Drive, take first right onto Maple Hill Road, follow for 2 miles, at stop sign take a left; the farm will be on your right.

Hummingbird Farm Greenhouse



Location: Turner, 202 Bean St.

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Greenhouse

Activities: Farm specializes in clematis, brugmansia, rare geraniums, herbs and Brown Thumb Plants. They offer over 100 varieties of clematis, plus all the help you need to succeed. “Clematis, the Queen of Flowering Vines” presentations will be at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be clematis planting demonstrations and self-guided garden tours available through the day. Refreshments available.

Directions: From Route 4, take Route 219 (Bear Pond Road) west. Bean Street is the first right-hand turn. Hummingbird Farm is 1 mile on the left.

Nezinscot Farm

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified organic dairy, sheep, goat and vegetable; farm store

Activities: Wide variety of organic products, along with beef, veal, lamb, pork, chicken and free-range turkeys. Visit the animals, sample cheeses and meats, tour through the gardens, have lunch or tea in the tea house. Felting and spinning demonstrations and garlic harvesting and tasting will take place throughout the day.

Location: Turner, Route 117

Directions: From Route 4, take Route 117 North, 1 mile on left and right. White barn with red face. Farm sign on the left. Midway between Turner Center and Turner Village.

Norlands Living History Center

Location: Livermore, 290 Norlands Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Historic farm of the late 1800s

Activities: Take a step back in time. You better make it a big one, because at Norlands the year is 1870 everyday. It was a time when many Americans still farmed. It was an age of innovations in techniques and tools used for farming. Come see it played out before your eyes. Try your hand at a scythe. Help wash the laundry or put up the harvest. Bring a picnic lunch. Handicapped-accessible.

Directions: From Lewiston and Auburn, take Route 4 north, turn right onto Route 108, look for the Norlands sign, go left on Norlands Road. From Augusta (a half hour), take Route 202 west to Winthrop, then take Route 133 North to Wayne, turn left on Route 219 and right on Route 108, drive 3 miles to Norlands Road and turn right.

Sunnyside Gardens

Location: Turner, 500 North Parish Road

Hours: Noon – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Perennial nursery

Activities: The nursery offers more than 900 varieties of perennials and complementary shrubs, many of which are displayed in the English-style border gardens on the grounds of this circa 1820 farmhouse. Garden tour will be at 1 p.m., discussing plant placement, choice and culture. Meet in front of the house. The owner will be on hand all day to answer questions about specific plants and their requirements. Cookies and iced tea will be served. Door prize: $25 gift certificate.

Directions: From Route 4, take Route 117 through Turner Center. Continue on Route 117 for 2.3 miles. Farm on left. Or follow MDOT signs from Route 4.

White Birch Alpacas

Location: Turner, 78 White Birch Drive

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Alpaca

Activities: The farm offers, sales, breeding, board, alpaca products and yarn. Please visit the Web site at www.whitebirchalpacas.com. There will be explanations of feeding birthing, fleece from alpaca to store and caring for alpacas.

Directions: From Route 4 in Turner at the blinking light take Route 117 (past town office); go 2 miles, take right on Lower Street, go ½ mile and take a left on White Birch Drive; farm is ½ mile on left.

FRANKLIN COUNTY

Good Karma Farm Alpacas

Location: Kingfield, 17 Shady Lane

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Alpaca

Activities: Farm breeds Hucaya alpacas and has breeding stock for sale. They also sell yarn and roving from their alpacas. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the animals up close and feel why alpaca fiber is so highly desired. Alpaca products available for sale. Handicapped accessible.

Directions: From Route 27, turn left onto West Kingfield Road at Jordan Lumber. Shady Lane is 2.6 miles from Jordan Lumber on the right. Bear right at the Slow Children Playing sign; look for the green house.

Shady Lane Farm

Location: New Vineyard, 108 Brahmer Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Dairy

Activities: This farm has a dairy milking facility with 45 cows and 80 head of young stock. The owners raise horn Dorset sheep and Yorkshire hogs and produce maple syrup. You can tour the dairy barn and hog barn, see the poultry and the petting zoo known as Lane’s Barnyard Friends. There will be wagon rides with Belgian horses and demonstrations of boiling maple syrup.

Directions: From Route 27 in New Vineyard, take Route 234 toward North Anson. Go about 2.5 miles, take first right (dirt road). The farm is in about ½ mile. From North Anson, take Route 234 toward New Vineyard about 8 or 9 miles (it will be the fifth left turn). Watch for the signs.

Whitehill Farm

Location: East Wilton, 357 McCrillis Corner Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified certified organic

Activities: The farm has 55 raised beds, crops grown under cover, gardens planted to vegetables, herbs, dried flowers and cover crops. Garden tours all day demonstrating organic and intensive planting methods, heirloom vegetable varieties and trials, mulching, rotation and composting.

A small garden kitchen store where you can sample and purchase produce, organic vinegars, pesto, garlic and herb mixes will be open all day.

Directions: From Route 2 (at Franklin Memorial Hospital), south on 133, 1 ½ miles to first four corners. Left on McCrillis Corner Road and up hill ½ mile. House is on the right across from white farmhouse.

OXFORD COUNTY

A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm

Location: Sumner, 106 Black Mountain Road.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified

Activities: Farm uses a Belgian draft horse to harvest firewood and haul sap for maple sugaring, and has laying hens. There will be farm tours with discussion of the traditional joinery timber frame barn, pastured poultry, rotational grazing to improve pasture and growing toward sustainability on a small farm using organic methods. Fiber is hand and mill spun to yarn. Felting demonstrations; farm store open.

Directions: From Route 26 go east on Route 219 about 7 miles. Turn left at Litchfield General Store. Less than 2 miles the road turns left, then bear left after 1/4 mile onto Black Mountain Road. Farm is 1 mile on the left. From Route 4 in Turner turn west onto 117 to Buckfield. Turn right after Tilton’s Store, cross bridge and right onto Route 140. North on 140, 5 miles to “T.” Turn left on Route 219. Go 5 miles to Litchfield General Store. Turn right and follow directions above.

Carter’s Farm

Location: Oxford, Route 26

Hours: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Type of farm: Vegetable, farm market and cross-country ski shop & kayak sale/rental

Activities: There will be balloons and games for the kids. The Carters will show and explain how to extend the season with row covers and how to grow vegetables without using pesticides. Free refreshments. Visitors may hike or bike on the cross-country ski trails. Rentals of canoes and kayaks will be available to use in the nearby river. There will also be a surprise presentation.

Directions: From Route 26 in Oxford (Welchville), 200 yards south of Junction 121 and 26. From South Paris, 6 miles south on Route 26.

Coffin’s Greenhouse

Location: Bryant Pond, Route 232

Hours: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Type of farm: Greenhouse

Activities: Farm grows annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. You can walk through the greenhouses, and check out their different plants, and take a look at the animals. Children can plant flowers. Punch and cookies will be served.

Directions: North on Route 26 from Norway, turn right onto Route 232 for 2 miles, greenhouse on right. South from Rumford on Route 4, take a left onto Route 232 for 10 miles; greenhouse on left.

Crestholm Farm

Location: Oxford, 167 Main St.

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Livestock, greenhouse, farm stand

Activities: Farm raises beef in former dairy barn. There are greenhouses, a farm stand, ice cream shop and a petting zoo including llamas. There are market gardens and hayfields which you may tour by horse and wagon from noon to 3 p.m. There will be demonstrations of agriculture education for all ages including spinning, hands-on dairy goat demo, beehive observation, baby chicks and laying hens. Oxford County Soil and Water will be on hand.

Directions: Going south, 3 miles from Oxford Plans Speedway; going north, 3 miles from Five Corners.

DeerWood Farm & Gardens

Location: Waterford, 571 Norway Road

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified organic

Activities: 3-acre farm with two greenhouses. They grow greens for sale in the early season, 1 acre of field-grown day lilies, small vegetable garden with blueberries and asparagus. Demonstration gardens show the no-till approach, mulching with hay and making new garden areas the easy way.

Directions: From Bridgton, take Route 117 to Route 37 in N. Bridgton. Take Route 37 to Route 118 (Norway Road), turn left onto Route 118 for 2.4 miles; farm is on the left. From Lovell-Fryeburg, take Route 5 to Route 118 in N. Waterford, go 3 miles from the split in the road; farm is on the right.

Hedgehog Hill Farm

Location: East Sumner, Bonney Road/54 Hedgehog Hill Road

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified organic herb and flower farm

Activities: The gardens include designed herb, annual and perennial beds as well as acres of production plants. There is a shop filled with products made from the farm’s own harvests and a small library. Greenhouses are filled with popular and unusual plants. At 2 p.m., there will be a tour of the garden and a lecture on photography in the gardens. For more information check the Web site at www.HedgehogHillFarm.com.

Location: From South Paris or Lewiston-Auburn, Take Route 117 to Buckfield. Follow signs in Buckfield, by bridge and church. From Augusta, take Route 202 to Winthrop, Route 133 to Wayne; Route 219 to East Sumner. Watch for a sign opposite the church.

M & W Farms & Greenhouses

Location: Greenwood, 572 Old County Road

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Greenhouse, perennial, trees & shrubs

Activities: Farm has four greenhouses featuring the newest varieties, plus old favorites. They stock perennials, day lilies, trees and shrubs. Fruit trees and hard-to-find items are their specialties. Information offered on garden planning, correct location and culture for plant choices, and relocation or division of plants and shrubs. Visitors will be free to walk around and explore the gardens.

Directions: From Route 26 in West Paris, take 219 west for 3.4 miles to Old County Road. Go .3 miles; farm is the first place on the right. From Route 26 in Bryant Pond, at flashing light go down Railroad Street to the end, go right over railroad, then turn left and go until you cross the railroad again, continue down Old County Road (4 miles from Route 26).

Maine’s Belmont Farm Alpacas

Location: Oxford, 301 Robinson Hill Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Alpaca

Activities: Small family alpaca farm and Shaker furniture business. Come learn about this unusual animal with soft, soft fleece. Learn how the fleece is made into beautiful sweaters, scarves and other luxurious goods. Spinning demonstrations and wagon rides.

Directions: From Route 26 south of Poland, turn right at Route 11, five corners with Mobil Station. Turn right at the list on Route 121 in Mechanic Falls. Go 3/10 mile, turn right on North Street, go 3 miles and watch for signs. From Route 26 north of South Paris, turn left at Oxford Station Road (meeting house on the corner) – go across RR tracks, stay straight, turn right a the stop sign, go 1 mil and watch for signs.

Morrill Farm

Location: Sumner, 85 Morrill Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified certified organic

Activities: There are 217 acres, including many miles of nature trails through which the Nezinscot River flows. The Perrons do farming as it was done in the past. Poultry, beef, chicken and hogs are raised on the farm. You will see butter making at 11:30 a.m., and tours of the barn with horse-drawn equipment. There will be picnic areas set up for those who wish to bring lunches.

Directions: From Auburn, take Route 4 to Turner, take a left on Route 117 to Buckfield, take a right on Route 140 to East Sumner, take a left on Route 219 to Litchfield Variety, turn right on Greenwood Road, go 1 mile to Morrill Rd. (left). From South Paris, take Route 26 north and go right on Route 219 in West Paris. Go 8 miles to Litchfield Variety and go straight onto Greenwood Road, 1 mile to Morrill Road (follow Morrill Farm B&B signs).

Mountain Brook Farm

Location: South Paris, 219 Streaked Mountain Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Type of farm: Alpaca

Activities: Visit more than 40 exotic alpacas at this family farm in the shadow of Streaked Mountain. Alpacas, native to South America, are smaller cousins of llamas and boast a very fine, luxurious fiber. They are gentle, curious and come in an array of colors. There will be a display area of end products, demonstrations of processing alpaca fiber, and children’s crafts.

Directions: From Turner, take Route 117 west to the center of Buckfield. Continue on Route 117 and go about 5.5 miles. Look for the intersection of Lovejoy Road and Streaked Mountain. Take that left and follow for 1 mile to the gray farm on the right. From South Paris center, take Route 117 east about 6 miles to intersection of Lovejoy Road and Streaked Mountain. Take the right and follow for 1 mile to gray farm on right.

Pleasant Valley Farm

Location: West Paris, 1 Gates Hill Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Registered Haflinger draft show ponies

Activities: Farm is packed with Haflinger ponies, used for parades and showing at fairs. The farm also has a variety of bantam hens and pigeons. They should have a new foal for Open Farm Day. There will be demonstrations on harnessing, hitching and driving ponies to a wagon. Wagon and harnesses will be on display. There will be an opportunity for hands-on participation with ponies.

Location: From South Paris, take Route 26 north for about 4 miles. Turn right onto Stearns Hill Road, go .7 miles and turn right onto Gates Hill Road and left into the driveway. From Bethel, take Route 26 south. Go about 4 miles beyond the Trap Corner Store. Turn left onto Stearns Hill Road, right onto Gates Hill Road and left into the driveway.

Pooh Corner Farm

Location: Mason Township, Bog Road

Hours: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Type of farm: Diversified farm with greenhouses

Activities: A 10,000-square-foot production greenhouse with cut flowers, perennials and pumpkins. There will be animals to pet and refreshments will be available. Handicapped accessible.

Location: Take Route 2 west from Bethel to MDOT sign for farm, take a left onto Bog Road. Farm is about 2.5 miles down the road. Look for greenhouses.

Troika Drafts and The Shoeing Shop

Location: Hebron, 955 Buckfield Road

Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Type of farm: Working draft horse farm

Activities: New England’s only full-service draft horse facility. The farm offers lessons and training, as well as on-site farrier and harness shops. Though all breeds are welcome, the farm specializes in Shires. Spring foals to retired drafts, many near 30 years old, are available for petting. There will be informational displays and short workshops on working draft horses. Tours of the woodlot and hayfield operations will be provided, weather permitting. Refreshments and restrooms available on site.

Directions: From Auburn, take Minot Avenue to Route 229, follow to West Minot. From Mechanic Falls, take Route 124 to West Minot. From West Minot village, take Route 124 to East Hebron. The farm is 2 ½ miles past Hebron Pines Campground. From Route 4 in Turner, take Route 117 toward Buckfield, turn right onto Route 124. Troika Drafts is 2 ½ miles past Roundabout Farm Perennials.
