POLAND – Union 29 Superintendent Nina Schlikin is initiating a “Parent University” for interested parents, grandparents and other child-care providers in Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland.

“The two main purposes of the Parent University are to present the latest educational information in a fun learning environment and to help parents understand what each can do to help prepare their child for school success,” Schlikin said.

This summer, Schlikin will present two workshops that are designed for the caregivers of children 3-to-5-years-old.

In the first, which will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29, parents will experience a learning environment based on how pre-school brains learn best.

Parents will learn what they can do to maximize brain development and concept development, exploring thinking, speaking and listening activities that help develop the brain and prepare children for school.

The second workshop, which will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, will focus on what caregivers can do to support and prepare their child for reading.

Attendees will learn about the reading process and the ways parents can prepare and support children for life through games and activities.

“I am truly looking forward to having fun with community members as they learn even more about their child’s potential,” Schlikin said.

“I am a strong believer in community stewardship. This is a meaningful way in which I can give back to my communities and serve an important educational purpose at the same time,” she added.

Light refreshments will be offered and child care will be available. Any child-care provider within the three towns is invited to participate.

Other sessions will be offered during the school year based on parent interest.

To register, child-care providers should call Carol Depot at 998-2727, ext. 104. A letter confirming participation and the location of workshops will be sent to registrants by July 25.
