NEW GLOUCESTER – A half dozen people were taken to a Lewiston hospital Thursday afternoon with a variety of injuries suffered in a crash on Route 122.
Police said two cars crashed at about 4 p.m. near the Poland town line. At least one man suffered a serious head injury in the wreck, which forced the closure of the road.
Several of the victims had to be removed from the vehicles with extrication equipment.
At least two people were hospitalized with serious injury, including a woman who was ejected from one of the vehicles, according to police who were at the scene.
Emergency crews as well as sheriff’s deputies from Androscoggin and Cumberland counties responded to the crash, but the investigation was turned over to Maine State Police.
State police did not return calls Thursday seeking details about the collision. The status of the victims could not be determined, although by late Thursday night, no one had died as a result of the crash, police said.
State police were reconstructing the wreck as they sought to determine the cause. Traffic was rerouted around the site as the victims were pulled from the vehicles and an investigation got under way.
