PORTLAND – David G. Holub, 46, of New Gloucester, died on Monday, July 17, suddenly after collapsing at work in Yarmouth.

He was born on March 29, 1960, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of George and Helen Holub nee Van Eck. He attended Walther Lutheran High School.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and landscaping. “Dave” worked at Old Tavern Farm in 1989 in the maintenance department.

In 1991, Dave went to work for Quality Containers of NE as head of maintenance. In 1996, Dave was promoted to plant manager. During his tenure at Quality Containers, bottle production and efficiency more than doubled. Dave’s ability to fix and maintain the machinery made him a valued part of the management team.

He was loved by his co-workers. It was important to him to make sure all of his employees were happy. He tried to keep a family atmosphere in the workplace. Any employee can tell you about Dave coming to their home to move furniture, fix a light, do some plumbing, or help with their pets. Dave loved animals. He was always available to help a friend. He could fix anything.

His daughter Deidre visited in 2005. During her stay, it was evident that this was the happiest time of Dave’s life. We all saw a side of him that we had never seen before. Dave could also be gentle and nurturing. Getting to know his daughter made a huge impact on his life, and they have remained close ever since.

He is survived by his parents; a daughter, Deidre Johnson and her husband, Ben; step-granddaughter, Samantha; and sisters, Susan Robinson and her husband, Ray, and Lynn Roche and her husband, Timothy. He was also survived by 15 nephews and nieces; and five great-nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and was a blessing.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Harry and Helen B. Van Eck; and a sister, Lori Mullins.
