AUBURN – Internationally renowned percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at the Artspace Studio, in the Great Falls Performing Arts Center. Opening will be Carl Dimow, Maine’s premier jazz and klezmer flautist, joined by trumpeter Mark Tipton and fiddler Greg Boardman.
Originally from Kobe and Osaka, Japan, Nakatani has toured throughout the world, having performed in more than 80 cities in 10 countries.
Utilizing a drumset, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, sticks and bows, he creates collages of sound that combine the sense of beauty found in traditionalJapanes folk music with the extended techniques of New Music – and he does it with great energy and intensity.
Besides live solo and ensemble performances, he has provided sound design for films and television projects, the latest for an improvised sound score for a silent movie, “The Water Magician,” part of the Hiroshi Sugimoto photograph exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. He is also a prolific collaborator and producer of CD projects. More information on Nakatani is available at www.hhproduction.org.
Dimow and Tipton have performed together in a wide variety of settings, ranging from straight ahead jazz to free improvisation to Balkan dance music. They frequently work with vocalist Andrea Goodman and percussionist Nicolai Yudanov. Dimow, flutist and guitarist, can also be heard in many other settings, including chamber music, acoustic blues and klezmer. He has been performing, recording and touring with the Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band for 15 years. Dimow is a member of the applied music faculty at Colby College.
Tipton is a native Mainer who lives and works both in Maine and New York City. His performances are also eclectic. He can be seen in NYC playing traditional jazz with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks and presenting revival-style performance art with the infamous Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir. Tipton received a master’s degree in trumpet performance from Mannes College of Music.
Boardman is a well-respected fiddler from Auburn.
