The wildflower pictured on page A2 of the July 14 Sun Journal is not Queen Anne’s lace. It is water hemlock (cicula maculata), which is very poisonous. Both are members of the parsley family (Umbelliferae), but water hemlock has toothed, lance-shaped leaves that occur in threes, as illustrated in the photo.
Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota) has more fernlike leaves. It is also called “wild carrot,” and “bird’s nest,” as the older umbels (umbrellalike flowers) curl into a cuplike shape, and is not poisonous.
