FALMOUTH – Brad Valois made the most of his late entry into this year’s New England Amateur.

The golfer from Valley Country Club of Rhode Island, who made it into the field as a late alternate Tuesday, fired a 34 on the back nine of the Woodlands Club of Falmouth Thursday afternoon to seal a two-stroke victory over Kevin Velardo of Billerica, Mass.

Valois was the only golfer to break par for the three-day, four-round event, finishing at 1-under 287. Velardo, who led by one at the turn of the final round Thursday, followed a front-nine 35 with a 37 on the back.

Jeffrey Hedden of Connecticut and Trevor Murphy of Vermont tied for third, seven strokes back of Valois, while Joe Alvarez, the best Maine finisher, tied for fifth with Bill Drohen of Massachusetts. Alvarez was just one off the lead after two rounds, but a 79 in the morning round Thursday sealed his fate.

Shawn Warren, the Maine Amateur champion, finished at 8-over for the tournament after getting all the way to 7-under through his first 14 holes Tuesday.

Warren had his best round of the tournament in Thursday’s fourth round, an even-par 72.

Mark Plummer rounded out the list of Maine golfers in the top 20 with a 12-over 300, good for a tie for 11th position with four other golfers.
