AUBURN – A woman who was abandoned after being thrown from a motorcycle on Fairview Court early Saturday morning has been identified as Irene Douglas.

The 36-year-old resident of Lewiston was listed in critical condition at Central Maine Medical Center Sunday evening after police sought the public’s help identifying her.

John Ferland, 32, of 69 Marshall Ave., Auburn, and Scott Soulard, 36, of 103 Nobles Lane, Old Orchard Beach, have been arrested by Auburn police in connection with the incident and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury, a class C felony.

Lt. Tim Cougle of the Auburn Police Department said the two men turned themselves in Sunday afternoon after seeing coverage of the accident in the Sun Journal.

The victim, who police said was a passenger on one of the motorcycles, was left bleeding in the street. Police released a photo of the woman Saturday night in the effort to identify her, saying she was “unresponsive” and that they could not talk to her.

A female resident of Fairview Court, who wished to remain anonymous, is credited with pulling Douglas from the street and saving her life.

The resident heard the motorcycles at 1:11 a.m. and went outside and watched two motorcycles leave the scene. She provided immediate care for the victim and called for help.

Crowell said the good Samaritan is a hero.

“This is what we want every neighbor to be like,” he said Saturday night.

Crowell believed the incident occurred shortly after the trio left the Midnight Blues Club in Auburn. Police, who do not know if alcohol played a part in the incident, plan to question the club’s management and patrons who may have witnessed anything unusual.

Crowell expressed concern about the events that led up to the near-fatal crash. “We need to know how, exactly, the victim ended up dumped from the motorcycle.”

Police collected evidence at the crash scene and they know the victim, who was wearing a white tank top and a jean skirt, was a passenger on one of the motorcycles because she had road rashes and other injuries consistent with a motorcycle crash, Crowell said.

The victim’s personal account of the accident is vital, and she will be interviewed as soon as she is capable, police said.

Ferland and Soulard are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4
