FARMINGTON – It’s hot, it’s humid, and there’s at least another month of heat and thunderstorms to go. But if the inertia of midsummer is starting to get you down, don’t worry.
This weekend Farmington’s unveiling it’s first Strawberry Festival, complete with cool strawberry drinks and desserts, hot-air balloon and wagon rides, live entertainment and arts and crafts demonstrations.
The festival, taking the place of the former Moonlight Madness event, was organized by members of the Downtown Farmington Business and Professional Association as a way to bring some culture, and a bit of fun, into the summer schedule.
It will kick off Friday with day-long clearance sales along Maine Street, a chicken barbecue downtown by the courthouse, followed by a concert in the gazebo and a hot-air balloon launch on the University of Maine at Farmington soccer field.
Saturday, the sales will go on, along with a strawberry dessert competition, a road race and Art in the Park – a juried art show and sale. There will be a lobster roll bag lunch, a motorcycle raffle, balloon rides and live performances by entertainers and musicians all day.
The festival also boasts 35 local artisans, some of whom will not only sell their wares, but demonstrate how they make them.
“It’s just a nice summer event – a nice cultural summer event,” said Ron Gelinas, of Mainestone Jewelry, who organized the festival with Marsha Planting, of the Calico Patch.
“People can get together and there will be music and entertainment, arts and crafts,” he said.
