DIXFIELD – Selectmen took a step Monday night that ensures that the new parking ordinance supersedes one passed nearly 30 years ago.

Residents at the annual town meeting in June approved a new parking ordinance that raises fines, lists parking restrictions and defines a number of parking- and traffic-related terms. What they didn’t do was rescind the ordinance passed in 1979.

Selectmen unanimously approved an amended version of the June-enacted ordinance.

Several fines are new, such as parking in a posted handicapped parking area without a plate or placard, which now carries a $50 fine. Other fines include $25 for blocking snow removal, and $15 each for violating the winter parking ban and parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant.

Not included in the ordinance, but adopted by selectmen on an as-needed basis during the past few years, are six streets that do not allow parking on either side of the road.

These are: Nash Street, High Street, Third Street, Mill Street, Highland Avenue, and Cement Hill, which is a portion of Weld Street.

Public Works Director Tim Hanson said signs banning parking on these streets are sporadic.

Town Manager Jeff Jacobson said signs will be posted by the end of the summer. Violations carry a $5 fine.

In other matters, the board decided to postpone action on a proposed street standards ordinance until further information is gathered. Selectmen and the Planning Board held a joint meeting last week to devise a new ordinance, particularly as it relates to roads in subdivisions.

The board also approved a mutual aid agreement with surrounding towns and learned that road work has begun on Nash Street.
