LEWISTON – Several familiar faces are among the list of replacement candidates running for the state Legislature.
Monday was the deadline for political parties to name new candidates in districts where another candidates had withdrawn.
Republican Larry Poulin replaces Jay Taylor in the race to unseat three-term incumbent state Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, in Senate District 16. Poulin was originally the Republican nominee in House District 72 but withdrew to run for the Senate.
Voters in Lewiston should recognize Poulin. In 2005, he ran for the City Council in Ward 5. Paul Samson won that race, 471-256.
Another well-known candidate is running in Senate District 17 against Democratic incumbent John Nutting, D-Leeds. Randall Greenwood will renew his efforts for a seat in the State House. Greenwood, a Wales selectman, was defeated in the Republican primary for the party’s nomination in House District 80 by George Thomson of Litchfield. Greenwood also ran in 2004.
State Sen. Peter Mills, R-Skowhegan, who lost the GOP nomination for governor to state Sen. Chandler Woodcock, R-Farmington, will try to hold onto his seat representing Senate District 26.
In the House, Ronald Potvin will run in place of Geoffrey William in District 69 against Rep. Deb Simpson, D-Auburn. As of last week, Potvin was also gathering signatures to run for mayor and for one of two at-large seats on the Auburn City Council.
David Hughes replaces Poulin in House District 72 against William Walcott, D-Lewiston.
David Sirois replaces Aubrey Knorr in House District 79 to fill the open seat vacated by state Rep. Earle McCormick, who is running for the state Senate.
And in House District 90, Republicans will not field a candidate against independent Tom Saviello of Wilton.
