AUBURN – Dick Gleason, owner of local AM radio station CNN 1240, is running for Auburn’s Ward 1 City Council seat.

“As the father of three grown daughters, I know how important good schools are for our children. As a small business owner for 31 years I know how important it is to be prudent with limited resources,” Gleason said in a prepared statement.

He said he would work cooperatively with other councilors to find the appropriate balance between funding community needs and living within the city’s means.

Gleason has served on community boards including the Boys and Girls Club of Auburn-Lewiston and the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce, among others, but this is his first run for elected office.

“I believe I have the skills to be an effective city councilor and look forward to meeting the residents of Ward 1, listening to their concerns and ideas, and asking for their support,” he said.

Gleason is president of Gleason Media Services, which owns and operates five radio stations in central Maine, and a Web site service. He holds degrees in business administration from the University of Maine at Orono. He also served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Gleason and his wife, Kathy, have lived in Auburn for the past seven years. Prior to that they lived in Norway for 24 years. He is active in the United Methodist Church of Auburn, serving as finance committee chair.
