OQUOSSOC – The Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association will hold the third annual Maine Guide Competition at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Bald Mountain shooting range near the association clubhouse.
Open to Registered Maine Guides only, the competition has consisted of a flycasting contest for distance and accuracy. This year a trap shooting contest will be added as a separate contest of skill.
The competition is part of Outdoor Sporting Heritage Day put on by the association. Open to the public free, the daylong event will be held at the clubhouse, Old Skiway Road. The day will feature exhibits and demonstrations on hunting, fishing and trapping.
Black powder demonstrations, hunting dog handling, archery demonstrations and gun safety and trap shooting are a few of the many events. Some of the wildlife artists in the area will be present along with area wardens and Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife personnel.
A $200 first prize will be offered in the guide’s flycasting contest and a trophy for first in the trap shooting contest.
“I love to see the grace and precision of these expert flycasters,” said Carl Dodge, event organizer.
