WATERFORD – Lottery players often have a secret good luck charm. They might play their children’s ages or birthdays, or their anniversary. Anyone in the Waterford area can add another secret charm: Melby’s Market and Eatery.

Melby’s on Route 35 in North Waterford sold a $10,000 Powerball ticket to Michael Roe of Kennebunkport on Saturday. Roe picked four of the five numbers needed to win: 14, 40, 54, and 55.

Paul Legare, who co-owns Melby’s with his daughter, Michelle Legare, was pleased but not at all surprised to hear of the win. “We seem to average something bigger than $1,000 every two to three years,” he said. This weekend’s winning ticket was at least the third $10,000 winner the store has sold since 1990.

“We still haven’t sold the big winner, yet,” he said. “I tell people we’re past due.”
