As a handicapped resident of Lewiston, I commend the city of Lewiston for trying to make the sidewalks more handicapped-accessible. However, what was the sense of doing so to the sidewalks that were already handicapped-accessible? Especially in the downtown area?

There are still several sidewalks within a three-mile radius of the downtown area that are not handicapped-accessible. Why not improve the sidewalks that need the attention instead of the ones that don’t? I have noticed that they have done mostly all the sidewalks in the downtown area, but handicapped people do go other places.

Also, what sense does it make to spend money on paving only to dig up the freshly paved area a week or two later? All that money wasted. Why don’t they just dig up what needs to be dug up before they pave?

Sometime this summer, I will take a tour of the area in my electric wheelchair to see the sidewalks that are not handicapped-accessible, and then I will present my list to the mayor’s office as well as to Public Works.

I think the city is doing a good job, but still needs lots of improvements for accessibility.
