LEWISTON – D. H. Austin McInnis, 92, of Lochness Road, Rumford, died Saturday, July 29, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston.
He was born on May 25, 1914, in Rumford, one of 14 children of Thomas and Clara (Bulger) McInnis. He graduated in 1932 from Stephens High School in Rumford, and from Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., Class of 1938, where he received his degree in accounting.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a storekeeper second class from Jan. 23, 1942, to Jan. 26, 1946.
Austin was employed as a bookkeeper at Oxford Paper Co. for several years, and then for many years at Israelson Motor Co. in Rumford until his retirement in the early 1980s.
He was a communicant of St Athanasius-St. John Church where he was active in the church choir; was a charter member of the Chisholm Ski Club and had designed the original Chisholm Ski Club logo; was a member of the Napoleon Ouellette Post No. 24, American Legion and Robert Shand Post No. 1641, V.F.W.
He loved animals, nature, and was a gentleman farmer. He enjoyed sports and was very active in skiing, baseball, basketball, and especially enjoyed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was married in Rumford on July 17, 1947, to the former Frances Kowalzyk who survives of Rumford.
Other survivors include three daughters, Louise Regan and husband, Patrick, of Bangor, Marcia McInnis of Gloucester, Mass., and Pamela McInnis-Kaubris and husband, Matthew, of Rumford; a son, M. Scott McInnis and wife, Trisha, of Hamilton, Mass.; four grandchildren, Alexa and Cameron Kaubris of Rumford, and Austin and Adelaide McInnis of Hamilton, Mass.; two sisters, Margaret and Mary L. McInnis of Rumford; and a brother, the Rev. Richard McInnis of Rumford.
He was predeceased by five sisters, Susan Wildes, Empress McInnis, Evelyn Brown, Mary and Geraldine McInnis; five brothers John, Jerry, Austin, Gerald and Thomas McInnis Jr.
