NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A 13-year-old boy was critically wounded when he was shot in an apparent drive-by shooting while riding his bicycle Saturday night. The boy, whose name has not been released, was shot in the back of the head and taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was critical condition on Sunday.
Police said the boy and friends were returning from a carnival at a nearby high school when a car approached them and someone opened fire. Police said it’s unclear if the victim was the intended target.
“It’s too early to tell,” Police Sgt. Andrew Muro said. “We certainly think the people who fired were firing at a group. Unfortunately, the victim was standing in that group.”
The shooting occurred in the same section of the city where two young teenagers were gunned down in the last month. One of those victims, 13-year-old Jajuana Cole an innocent bystander, was standing with a group of friends when four young men approached and open fire. Several suspects have been arrested in that case.
Police said the the community has been very helpful in the latest case and are confident an arrest will be made.
“They don’t have any respect for life,” resident Sharone Hamer said. “It’s sad. Something’s got to change.”
