CRAWFORD’S PURCHASE, N.H. (AP) – A New York State man drowned in a swimming hole in the White Mountains.

Friends told police that Roger Schaefer, 22, of Dewitt, N.Y., called for help Saturday afternoon after jumping from a high ledge at the Upper Falls on the Ammonoosuc River.

Friends and other swimmers got him out of the water and performed CPR, but could not revive him. He was pronounced dead at Littleton Regional Hospital.

Witness Josh Tarbell, 18, of Manchester, said he saw Schaefer and another man jump together off the cliff, which may have been as much as 30 feet high. Schaefer was pulled into a whirlpool and yelled for help, Tarbell said.

Schaefers friend, who made it to shore, jumped again to rescue him but was pulled in as well. Other witnesses threw a rope and saved the friend, Tarbell said, but Schaefer went under.
