GREENWOOD – Phyllis Kimball Coolidge, 64, of Locke Mills, passed into the Lord’s hands on Friday, July 28, 2006, after a long illness of diabetes and a short illness of pulmonary hypertension.
She was born in Bath to C. Mellen and Jeanette Kimball, and lived her early childhood at Five Islands. She had fond memories and loved going to Reid State long before it became a state park.
She attended schools in Locke Mills and graduated from Gould Academy in 1961. She attended Aroostook State Teachers College in Presque Isle.
Deciding it was more important to be married than complete school, she married Robert A. Coolidge in September 1963. They became parents of three children, Robert David, Lee-Ann Doris and Bethany Dawn.
She and her husband owned and ran Bob’s Corner Store in Greenwood for 27 years, until they decided to retire in 2001.
In 1964, she ran the town office and became tax collector for Greenwood, a position she held and loved until they went to town managership. Over the years, for the town, she became tax collector, treasurer, then town clerk and registrar of voters.
Phyllis and her deputy, Denise Swan, talked the town into becoming computerized. Greenwood was one of the first towns in the area to do so.
Over the years, she did many things: she ran the 4-H club in town for several years, ran the church youth group and organized and helped the Locke Mills Union Church print a community cookbook.
Phyllis was a charter member of the Greenwood Historical Society. She worked on taking and gathering pictures for and helped organize the pictorial history of Greenwood from 1816 to 1960.
In 2003, Phyllis, Robert and her eldest granddaughter, Rose, dog, Curly, and two cats, Abby and Butterscotch, took a road trip to Alaska. On the way back, they visited many national parks. She always felt very fortunate to have completed this trip as well as having visited England, France, Spain and Ireland.
Phyllis also felt very fortunate to have been able to host an exchange student, Hege, from Oslo, Norway for a year.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; two daughters, Lee-Ann and husband, Richard Wright, of Bethel, and Bethany and husband, Steve Pelletier, of Hanover; five beautiful grandchildren, Rose, Thomas and Sarahanne Wright, and Alice and Forest Pelletier; her dog, Curly, and her beloved cats; her mother, Jeanette Kimball; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her son, David; her father, C. Mellen; and her sister, Elaine Henley.
She will be missed by many.
