NEW GLOUCESTER – A variety of events and activities are being offered during August at the Shaker Village, Route 26.
A Shaker Village Pesto Party will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, and Wednesday, Aug. 9. Five herbs will be harvested from the Shaker herb gardens and recipes and tastings will follow. Fee is $25 and preregistration is required.
On Saturday, Aug. 19, a handmade paper workshop will be held. Using a variety of resources, participants will create handmade paper for writing, painting and the like. Fee is $30 and preregistration is required. Tim Greene will present a demonstration on blacksmithing. It is free and open to the public.
A Shaker-Style Dovetail Tray will be made on Saturday, Aug. 26. Noted woodworker Chris Becksvoort will lead a variety of workshops, but this one is the only one not full. Sign up to make an 18-inch pine dovetail tray. Fee is $40 and preregistration is required.
Also on Aug. 26 a chair-caning workshop will be held. Fee is $30 and preregistration is required. R & R Spinners will present a demonstration, which is free and open to the public.
Nature walks guided by Carol Beyna, a trained naturalist, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19. The walks will be offered at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Fee is $5, adults; $2, children; free, under 6. Reservations are required. The walks cover Shaker fields, woods, Loon’s Point on Sabbathday Lake and the footbridge at Aurelia’s Cascade.
