MINOT – Road Manager Arlan Saunders told selectmen Monday night that work on the summer paving program has begun in earnest.

“Commercial Paving & Recycling started the reclaiming today on Old Woodman Hill Road. They grounded real well. I may not have to add much gravel,” Saunders said.

Saunders said he expected the reclaiming would take the better part of this week, leaving him next week to place gravel before actual paving takes place two weeks hence.

Saunders also said that it appears work to line the culvert coming out of the fire pond at the base of Fortin Drive has been successful and developer Don Fortin told him the guardrail along that section of Fortin Drive will be installed within days.

Saunders delivered bad news regarding the town’s one-ton truck. “I had to take it to O’Connors to have a front hub replaced. That is another $700 bill and about the 10th breakdown it has had this year,” he said.

Saunders said selectmen might get a request to replace the one-ton at budget time.

School committee member Sue Callahan told selectmen that plans for the repair of the Minot Consolidated School’s front entrance were changed once the extent of water damage became evident.

The roof support columns will be replaced as will be cement slab base, but Callahan said the reconstructed entry will not be enclosed as originally planned.

After a brief public hearing, selectmen signed for a $77,000 interim financing bond to pay for the cab and chassis of the town’s new fire engine.

Part of the $229,000 package approved at March town meeting, the financing charges will be paid this fall when the Maine Bond Bank financing becomes available.

Town Administrator Rhonda Irish told selectmen that Auburn officials have accepted an arrangement to have Minot residents dispose of their old TV sets and computer monitors.

Irish noted that about a week ago legislation went into effect controlling how “universal waste” items may be disposed. To dispose of old TV sets and computer monitors, Minot residents must pay a $5 per item handling charge at the Minot town office and, receipt in hand, continue with their goods to the Auburn Public Works Department.

Selectmen also noted that public hearings on the proposed expansion of development impact fees are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 and 28, at the town office.
