DURHAM – Selectmen accepted another snowplowing bid from town road commissioner and private contractor Clifton Larrabee Sr. on Tuesday night.
The three-year agreement with Larrabee Construction is for $958,741 and must be approved by a vote of the town Aug. 22.
Larrabee, who has been the plowing contractor for Durham for years, was the only bidder for the job of clearing 69.5 miles of roads.
His latest three-year offer is $284,492 more than the last one because of higher fuel and operating costs.
The cost for 2006-2007 is $276,093; for 2007-2008 it is $317,493; and for 2008-2009 it is $365,155.
Selectmen held a 30-minute executive session with attorney Jack Conway to discuss the firetruck dispute with Northeast Bank and had no votes or comments afterward.
The town paid Emergency Vehicles of Maine in Lewiston nearly $112,000 for a new truck before the company went into receivership, fire Chief Bill St. Michel said. The company used the truck as collateral to get a loan from Northeast Bank, and the bank now wants to sell the truck to the town, he said.
An estimated $50,000 more is needed to finish it.
In other business, it was noted another special town meeting will be needed to allocate additional money for legal expenses because only $8,000 was budgeted for legal costs and $3,200 for title searches for the year. It was reported that legal expenses are now well over $30,000, much of it due to the firetruck issue.
Six abatements totaling $3,154 were authorized, and $38,719 in supplemental tax bills were approved.
