TURNER – Selectmen this week tabled a fire department request to buy a firetruck from the Louisa, Va., fire department.
Fire Chief Mike Arsenault and Assistant Chief Ross Gagne said the 1998 Ford F-Series super duty brush truck with 18,000 miles was put up for sale because it was no longer needed by the Virginia department.
The truck would be used principally for auto accident responses and could bring income to the town, as it would be the only truck necessary to respond to accidents, due to its equipment. Arsenault and Gagne will get maintenance records on the vehicle, prices for a new truck with similar equipment, and the truck’s VIN number.
If that information points to the truck being a reasonable purchase, selectmen will authorize Arsenault to make an offer pending personal inspection of it by the chief.
In other business:
• Selectmen authorized Town Manager James Catlin to send letters asking people operating illegal junkyards to clean them up by Tuesday, Sept. 5, or face legal action on Sept. 6.
• The board voted to accept payment of $98,324 from the Maine Department of Transportation as its share of the Urban-Rural Initiative Program. The funds will come in quarterly payments of $24,581 beginning in September, to be used for capital improvements to local roads.
