LEWISTON – Donald J. Dutil, 84, of 35 Dove Lane, Lewiston, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Lewiston on July 10, 1922, he was the son of Adelard and Alice Levesque Dutil. He was educated in Lewiston school system and attended the University of Ottawa for three years before graduating from high school in 1942. He received a degree in accounting from Bentley College in Boston. He worked as an accountant at Bates Mill Fabrics for a number of years, and then operated Don’s Gift Shop on Lisbon Street in the late 1950s through the mid 1960s.
After closing his gift shop, he returned to Bates and ended his career as manager of the Bates Mill Store, retiring in 1981. He was an accomplished classical pianist and entertained family and friends. He served in the Army as a medic during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He held the rank of Sergeant. He saw action in Africa, Italy, and France. He was very close to his sister’s family, and had a close network of cherished friends. He was a gracious entertainer, and loved to cook.
He is survived by his sister, Magella D. Gardner; his niece, Cheryl Boucher; and nephews, Kenneth Gardner Jr. and Douglas J. Gardner; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
