Years ago I heard, having learned of Darwin’s new theory of evolution, a vicar was extremely upset. He shared this with his wife. She thought for awhile and said: “Oh, my dear! Let us hope that it is not true. But if it is true, let us pray that not too many people find out about it.”

In the Sun Journal on Aug. 7, George Fogg refers to the Colorado business leaders who wrote to several chambers of commerce and trade organizations warning of unintended consequences from the Taxpayer Bill of Rights as condescending. They should be thanked for offering advice.

Are the people of Maine prepared for more than “$400 million in cuts in state programs”? What about local governments? Where will they make cuts?

Supporters of TABOR claim that it is a simple solution to government spending based on the rate of inflation and population growth. A lot of the population growth in Maine is people buying or building second homes. They pay property taxes and some sales tax but no income tax. Do they count?

Education is the basis of democracy, the economy and progress. I know people in the field of education who are dedicated, caring professionals. Not people out to: “Feed from the public trough … to eat at the expense of taxpayers.” Mr. Fogg’s statements are an insult to the professions of educators, social and government workers.

I pray that the people of Maine realize the truth about TABOR.
