LEWISTON – Leona Bertrand, 92, of d’Youville Pavilion, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, of Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born in Lewiston on Nov. 25, 1913, the daughter of Edouard and Rosilda (Inkell) Girard. She spent her early life in the Lewiston area, then moved to Bridgeport, Conn., until she moved back to Maine in the early 1970s.

She worked for General Electric in Connecticut and was one of the first employees at General Electric in Auburn. She also worked at Bates College in the cafeteria for many years. She resided on Beacon Street in Lewiston for many years and was also a resident of the Esplanade in Auburn, and The Lamp in Lisbon.

She was a woman with class, a good sense of humor, an admirable work ethic and a spirited personality. She was also a very attentive caregiver to her mother. When she retired, she enjoyed being with her friends on their many trips to Foxwoods and Florida. She also loved time spent with her ever-growing family.

She is survived by her nieces, Diane Lazure of Lewiston, Claudette Jordan of Auburn, Jackie Gagnon of Auburn, Jeannine St. Hilaire of Minot, Nancy Lebrecque and Trudy Paladino of Lewiston; a nephew, Ivan Lazure of Lewiston; nine great-nieces and nephews; and six great-great-nephews. She had a few special “companions,” her cats, Fluffy and Spuddie, whom she loved very much.

She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Yvette Lazure; brothers, Ludger, Lionel, Samuel and Armand; two nephews, Donald Lazure and Robert Girard; and a great-nephew, Jason Gagnon.

The family appreciates the love, attention and wonderful care given to our aunt by the staff of Three-East at d’Youville Pavilion; the staff of Beacon Hospice; and The Lamp Alzheimer’s Residential Care.
