LEWISTON – Family, friends, co-workers and United Way representatives recently gathered at the Lewiston District Courthouse to honor Judge John Beliveau as the Jim Phillips Award recipient.

The award was established in recognition of Phillips’ commitment, vision, strategic thinking and leadership. The award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies the United Way of Androscoggin County’s mission, vision and values.

The recipient receives $500 which they contribute to a local charity. Beliveau acknowledged the work of Trinity Jubilee Center with his award.

In addition to serving on the bench for 20 years, Beliveau has dedicated his time, effort and heart to improving the Lewiston community. During his time on the bench, he has seen families struggle with substance abuse, mental health issues and the challenges they faced for resources and support.

From the experience, he created a Family Treatment Drug Court. With Beliveau as the lead, the drug court helps families deal with the issues and provides support, guidance and encouragement to help people create a better life.

Beliveau also created a Best Practice Task Force for attorneys, guardians and Department of Health and Human Service officials to educate and address the issues that family courts face each day.

Beliveau also finds time to volunteer his services as track and field coach for Bates College and serves as a key supporter for the students on the team.

United Way of Androscoggin County is a community building organization that creates positive change with the assistance of hundreds of volunteers each year. For more information about United Way or volunteer opportunities, call 795-4000 or visit www.unitedwayandro.org.
