Mainers who heat with coal should stock up now to be sure they don’t run into trouble finding enough this winter, the state energy office and several coal dealers said Wednesday.

Nancy Wentzel of the Office of Energy Resources said the availability of coal in Maine is not yet a problem.

“But the potential for coal supply difficulties in the winter does exist.” she said.

Fred Pressner, vice president of Ring’s Coal in Yarmouth, said “there will probably be some problems this winter, but not too many.”

Ring’s, which sold 3,300 tons last year and expects to triple that this winter, has added storage bins, he said. Pressner agreed that people should stock up on coal ahead of time, and said may have been doing that this summer.
