LEWISTON – Joseph Onesime Beote, 77, of Yarmouth, died Friday, Aug. 11.
He was born in Yarmouth on Aug. 19, 1928, a son of Emmanuel and M. Fidelis (Perry) Beote. He was educated in Yarmouth schools.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a sergeant in the 5th Regimental Combat Team, Company G, from December 1950 to November 1952. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations.
Joe was a member of AmVets Robert W. Boyd Post No. 2 in Yarmouth and the American Legion Post No. 5 in Waterville.
He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth, where he dedicated many hours to major restoration projects.
During the late ’50s and early ’60s, he enjoyed playing for the Town of Yarmouth baseball team. He always loved sports.
Joe was dedicated to his family and his work. At the age of 17, he built his parents their first owned house. He was an extremely skilled plasterer and was known throughout the region for his exceptional craftsmanship.
He enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, clamming and family gatherings. His love of family was his hobby, and it showed itself in his interest in trips to the Canadian Maritime Provinces, especially his passion – frequent trips to Prince Edward Island to connect with his family roots there. There was even a trip to Ireland. Even though he had a quiet nature he was a natural-born storyteller. He will also be remembered for his patience.
