If you want an exciting career – one that stimulates you, challenges you, and rewards you with immense satisfaction – a degree in science sets you on the right path.
Studying science gives you the innovative skills for an ever-changing workforce environment and makes you a valuable and sought-after resource for employers.
Employers in government, industry and education need graduates who are trained to think, analyze and communicate. Science graduates have a unique blend of skills that give them the capacity to tackle problems with initiative and resourcefulness, to plan and execute projects and to work as part of a team.
Science students learn to think in a scientific manner, to test hypotheses and reach conclusions. This is useful in many types of work.
A Science degree takes you from the microscopic to the cosmic level, into physical and biological processes and from order to chaos. It develops your investigative skills, it trains you in laboratory techniques and it teaches you the tools of critical analysis and communication. These are the skills for lifelong learning.
The bachelor of arts degree in natural and applied sciences at USM/L-A provides students with a comprehensive liberal arts education that emphasizes basic sciences. Students may develop a concentration focusing on the biology of human health and illness or one focusing on environmental issues.
Graduates of this program have gone on to careers as lab instructors and coordinators, science teachers, research technicians, water quality assurance and soil conservation specialists. In addition, many students have pursued graduate study in occupational therapy, osteopathic medicine, applied immunology, teacher education, and biochemistry.
