farmington – A man who was arrested after police said he fired a gun in a Wilton apartment escaped from the Franklin County jail Sunday afternoon.
Daniel Jackson, 24, climbed a 20-foot-high fence topped with razor wire to make good his escape. It wasn’t his first time on the run. He was also being held as a fugitive from justice after he allegedly fled from a New York state jail.
Jackson was still at large Sunday night, but his sister has been charged with being his accomplice in the escape.
Angela Taylor, 35, of Jay, admitted to driving the vehicle that Jackson escaped in, said Franklin County Sheriff Dennis Pike.
Pike said Taylor, Jackson’s sister, was charged with aiding and abetting an escape. She was also being held Sunday night on a charge of violating conditions of release. The latter charge was linked to a year-old crime, police said.
Pike said Jackson fled the recreation yard of the jail at 1:30 p.m. He climbed over the 20-foot-high razor wire fence and slipped into an awaiting car.
He was believed to be bleeding from wounds suffered when he climbed the fence, the sheriff said.
The getaway car was found abandoned shortly after the escape. Police were unsure of what Jackson might be driving or riding in as of Sunday night.
Jackson, who listed a Jay address, was initially arrested by Wilton police on a terrorizing charge on July 17 after he allegedly fired a gun inside an apartment in the Fernwald complex off Route 2 in Wilton about 1 a.m July 12.
No one was hurt in the shooting. By the time police and a tactical team surrounded the complex, Jackson had fled the area.
He was picked up a week later in Rumford.
Wilton Police Chief Wayne Gallant said Jackson was also wanted on a felony charge of escape in New York state.
Because of that escape charge, Jackson was being held at the Farmington jail on a fugitive from justice warrant issued from New York.
Jackson was described by police as being a black male with black hair and brown eyes. He is 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 170 pounds.
