MIAMI – After a 9-3 season and an embarrassing 40-3 loss to LSU in the Peach Bowl, coach Larry Coker cleaned house. He fired offensive line coach Art Kehoe, who coached all five of the school’s national championship teams, as well as offensive coordinator Dan Werner, linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves and running backs coach Don Soldinger. After 11 years in the NFL, Rich Olson, who coached under Dennis Erickson at Miami from 1991-94, returns to run an offense that has lacked big plays in recent seasons.
MICHIGAN – After the Wolverines’ worst season in more than 20 years, defensive coordinator Jim Hermann was replaced by secondary coach Ron English. For the offense, Terry Malone was canned, and special teams coach and recruiting coordinator Mike DeBord was promoted to coordinator. Perhaps they will find a way to beat Ohio State – Michigan is 1-4 in the past five seasons, last winning in 2003.
TENNESSEE – The Volunteers’ offense got so bad last year Randy Sanders gave up his offensive coordinator duties during the season. Coach Phillip Fulmer has turned to an old friend for answers. David Cuctliffe, the offensive coordinator during Peyton Manning’s stay at Tennessee and for the Vols’ 1998 title team, is back in his old job. First task: Fix QB Erik Ainge.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – Pete Carroll, a defensive wiz, has been his own coordinator. But last season, the boss couldn’t get his guys to play consistently good defense, and it probably cost the Trojans a national title. To fix the problems, Carroll convinced former USC assistant Nick Holt to give up a job with the St. Louis Rams to become his defensive coordinator.
