BARRE, Vt. (AP) – A motorcyclist who led police on a 40-mile chase that reached speeds of 120 mph was captured after crashing into a wall and running from the scene, authorities said.
Anthony J. Campbell, 21, of Barre, was charged with careless and negligent operation, reckless endangerment, violating the conditions of his release and leaving the scene of an accident. He was held on $5,000 cash bail.
Campbell, who had a 16-year-old female passenger with him, was initially targeted on Route 62 on Sunday when police tried to stop him for speeding. He then led them on a chase from Berlin to Bolton, with Berlin police notifying state troopers that he was entering Interstate 89 north. Three state troopers and a Waterbury police cruiser chased him, eventually catching up with him when the motorcycle made a U-turn and crashed into a building at the intersection of Route 100 and Route 2.
Campbell, who ran from the scene, was arrested Monday night at his home. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
