LOS ANGELES – Miguel Cabrera hit two homers and drove in five runs, Cody Ross hurt his former team with four RBIs before leaving with a bruised knee, and the Florida Marlins beat Los Angeles 15-4 Wednesday to snap the Dodgers’ six-game winning streak.

The Dodgers had been on the club’s best run in 107 years, winning 17 of their previous 18 games. No team in franchise history had gone 17-1 since the Brooklyn Superbas won 20 of 21 during the 1899 season.

The last NL team to win 17 games in an 18-game stretch was the 1986 New York Mets, who went on to win the World Series. The AL’s Minnesota Twins won 19 of 20 earlier this season.

Cubs 1, Astros 0

HOUSTON – Emergency starter Ryan O’Malley pitched eight impressive innings in his major league debut and Michael Barrett homered to help Chicago complete a three-game sweep of slumping Houston.

Both teams looked sluggish at the plate, a half-day after the Cubs won 8-6 in 18 innings, the longest regular-season game in Minute Maid Park history.

Barrett homered in the sixth and Juan Pierre had the other three hits off Andy Pettitte (11-13), who struck out seven in eight innings.

But the Astros were even more flustered by O’Malley (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day to replace scheduled starter Rich Hill – who tossed the final two innings of Tuesday night’s marathon that ended just before 1 a.m. CDT.

Brewers 5, Pirates 2

PITTSBURGH – David Bell’s bases-loaded single, his fourth hit of the game, drove in two runs in a three-run 13th inning that carried Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.

Geremi Gonzalez (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win and Francisco Cordero earned his eighth save in eight opportunities since being traded by Texas to the Brewers on Aug. 9.

Phillies 3, Mets 0

PHILADELPHIA – Jon Lieber pitched his first shutout in more than five years, Chris Coste hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies won their third straight over the New York Mets.

The Phillies thumped the Mets by a combined 24-4 score in the first two games of the series – hardly indicative of a team that trails NL East-leading New York by 12 games.

Nationals 9, Braves 6

WASHINGTON – Ryan Zimmerman homered and singled to raise his rookie-leading RBI total to 78, and the Washington Nationals handed John Smoltz his first loss in more than two months.

Eight members of Washington’s starting nine reached base against Smoltz (10-6), and the Nationals batted around in a four-run second inning.

Orioles 3, Yankees 2

NEW YORK – Adam Loewen beat the Yankees for the second time in August, and four Baltimore relievers combined for shutout relief that stopped the Orioles’ five-game losing streak.

New York’s AL East lead over the second-place Red Sox was cut to two games. After playing the Orioles on Thursday, the Yankees head to Boston for a five-game series that opens with a day-night doubleheader Friday.

Devil Rays 8, Blue Jays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – James Shields threw six solid innings to stop his six-game losing streak and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays ended their seven-game skid.

Shields (5-6) allowed three runs – one earned – and four hits in his first win since June.

21. He had been winless in nine starts after winning four straight outings.

Damon Hollins hit his career-high 14th homer for the Devil Rays, who are 9-22 since the All-Star break.

Toronto got a solo home run from Bengie Molina. The Blue Jays are 7-3 since a season-worst seven-game losing streak.

Jonny Gomes and Jorge Cantu had consecutive RBI doubles before Hollins hit a two-run homer off Ted Lilly (10-11) to put the Devil Rays ahead 4-0 in the first.
