WESTBROOK – Ernest P. Mayernik, 85, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Springbrook Center for Health Care.

He was born April 27, 1921 in Coaldale, Pa., son of the late Izidora and Karolini (Kovac) Mayernik. .

He was married to Simonne Marcoux Mayernik on June 12, 1948.

He had lived in Rumford for more than 50 years before moving to the Portland area five years ago.

While in Rumford he worked in the paper mill more than 35 years.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John’s Church in Rumford and a member of VFW Post 1641 in Rumford and Post 6859 in Portland.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II receiving a purple heart and 14 battle stars. He was a humble man, devoted husband and loving father. He was an avid sports enthusiast and a passionate New York Yankees fan.

Beside his wife, surviving family includes three children, Daniel Mayernik and his wife, Juliette, of Augusta, Gloria Mayernik of Portland and George Mayernik and his wife, Sylvia, of Derry, N.H.; he was one of 12 children; survivors include Mary Rhodes of Massapequa Park, N.Y., Millie Mayernik of Brooklyn, N.Y., Joseph Mayernik of Clearwater, Fla., Margie Drodz of Cresgeville, Pa. and Michael Mayernik of Lansford, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Miranda.
