WEST FREEMAN – Hazel A. Nickerson, 92, of Strong, died Tuesday, Aug. 15.

She was born in Augusta on Oct. 21, 1913, the daughter of Clement H. and Mabel A. (Pomeroy) Russell. She was educated in the schools of Augusta and Farmington graduating from Cony High in 1931 as salutatorian.

She married her husband of 51 years, Lawrence Nickerson, January 1946 in Strong. She worked as the assistant cost accountant at Forsters in Strong for 40 years before retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the Church of Nazarene, where she taught an adult women’s class. She enjoyed motorcycle riding, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, reading, and played basketball at Cony.

She is survived by three daughters, Gayle Petrie and her husband, Gerald, of Avon, Judith Toothaker and her husband, Den Cormier, of Lewiston and Deborah Smith and her husband, E. Rodney Smith Jr., of Strong; two sons, Russell Norton and his wife, Beverly, of Auburn and Michael Nickerson and his wife, Amanda, of Benton; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Annabell Darveau of Augusta.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence in 1997; a son, Gerald Nelson Norton; two sisters, Alma Sturgis and Cora Clary; and a brother, Earl Russell.
