I’ve been reading the letters to the editor about the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Maine people want to limit tax increases, as we’re in the top 10 of the country.
While TABOR seems attractive, I wonder if it’s the right move? I will vote for it because we need to start making Maine government more responsible. I think that we spend too much on education. The premise is misleading that if we have educated people to do the job, we’ll attract business to Maine. The cost of moving here is too great. The only reason businesses locate here, if they do, is cheap labor with high education.
Our educated people leave here to get jobs in other states. The other states benefit from our high cost of education, so where is our return on the cost of education in this state?
I also read about energy projects. Any time wind or tidal energy projects are proposed, the people in those areas object because they feel it would ruin the scenery. Well, imagine the destruction done by terrorists using money they get from oil-producing countries.
If Maine were to install energy-producing projects to lower our dependance on foreign oil and create lower energy costs, maybe, just maybe, companies would locate here and pay higher wages.
