HAMPDEN, Mass. (AP) – A Hampden man was charged with murder Wednesday after police arrived at his home to investigate a missing person report and found the body of a 16-year-old girl.

Police say they received a call from Joshua Whitaker’s house Tuesday night. When they went to his home, they found the body of Kelsea Owens, of Wilbraham.

Police say she suffered blunt force trauma, and an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of her death.

Hampden County District Attorney William Bennett said Whitaker was hospitalized Wednesday at Baystate Medical Center.

When asked by The Republican newspaper if Whitaker was hospitalized for mental health reasons or for injuries, Bennett said, “I don’t think he has any injuries.”

Investigators are not releasing any information about the relationship between Whitaker and Owens and are still looking into a possible motive. Whitaker, 20, was charged with murder and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Palmer District Court.
