AUBURN – If you’re interested in Auburn schools and want to become involved in policy, the Auburn School Committee has an offer for you.

The committee is looking for a temporary school committee member to serve from now through November, Assistant Superintendent Tom Morrill said Thursday.

Committee member Theodore Belitsos has left because he is taking a new job and moving to Texas. Belitsos, a doctor at St. Mary Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, is moving to San Antonio, committee member David Das said.

Belitsos was an at-large member, which means his replacement can live in any ward in Auburn.

Persons interested in serving should submit letters of intent to the school committee, explaining who they are and why they’re interested, Morrill said. The committee hopes to review those letters at it’s next meeting on Aug. 23, and appoint a new member on Sept. 6.

The letters should be addressed to committee chairwoman Kathy Constantine. They can be e-mailed to Superintendent Barbara Eretzian at superintendent@auburnschl.edu, or to rwalton@auburnschl.edu. The words school committee vacancy should be in the e-mail’s subject line.

The letters can also can be delivered to the school department’s office in Auburn Hall, or mailed to that address.

The appointed member will serve through November. The permanent member will be elected by voters in November and begin serving in December, Morrill said.

Anyone interested in running for the at-large seat needs to take out nomination papers by Aug. 24, Das said.
